How Much Time Should You Spend on a Piece of Content?

What good is spending time on a piece of content if you don’t know what you want to get out of the content you produce?

How much time you spend writing or editing a piece of content matters. Ultimately, the focus should be less on how much time you spend on a piece of content and more on the quality of the time you spend on it.

What does it mean to spend “quality time” on a piece of content?

Give a piece of content your undivided attention. This means tuning out your Slack messages and other notifications, going line by line through the piece, and reviewing the piece multiple times.

If you get tired or bored when you’re reading something you or someone else wrote, others will feel the same way. Thus, if you publish the content as is, members of your target audience are very likely to be turned off by it.

On the other hand, if your content’s timely, relevant, engaging, and accurate, it’s likely to hit the mark with you. When members of your target audience view this content, they’ll probably enjoy it, too.

Should you set a timeline for a piece of content?

If you don’t have a lot of time to produce a high-quality piece of content, establish a deadline for it. Doing so will force you to make the most of the time available to you to produce the best content possible.

When you put together a timeline for your content, you should:

  • Plan how you’ll use your time. Give yourself time for research, writing, and editing.
  • Incorporate breaks into your timeline. Depending on the length of the piece and how much time you have available, take breaks from writing. When you return from a break, you’ll feel revitalized and ready to give your content a fresh look.
  • Avoid rushing through the process. Use all of the time available to you. If you have time left, it never hurts to prepare social media posts or look for other ways to promote your content to your target audience, either.

Don’t want to spend a lot of time on your content?

You can hire a content writer to help you out. Ideally, your writer will:

  • Look at what you want to do with your content and plan accordingly.
  • Produce content for you, on time and on budget.
  • Make sure your content is exactly what you want and that you’re getting maximum value out of it.
